Listen to this article

“She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.”

Context:Proverbs 31:22 is part of a passage often referred to as the description of the virtuous woman or the ideal wife. In this verse, we gain insights into the clothing choices and skills of this admirable woman.

The verse begins by stating that she “maketh herself coverings of tapestry.” This suggests that the virtuous woman takes care of herself and invests in her appearance. By making her own coverings, she exhibits a sense of creativity and craftsmanship. It emphasizes the value of self-care, where a woman takes pride in her appearance without neglecting other important aspects of her life.

Clothing choices:The verse goes on to mention that her clothing is “silk and purple.” In biblical times, silk and purple were considered luxurious and expensive materials. Purple was a color associated with royalty and wealth. By wearing such garments, the virtuous woman is portrayed as someone who appreciates quality and beauty. Her choice of clothing reflects her dignity and her ability to manage her resources wisely.

Symbolism of tapestry:The use of tapestry implies more than just practical clothing. Tapestry was intricately woven, often depicting elaborate scenes or designs. It points to the woman’s attention to detail and her ability to create beautiful things. This may extend beyond her clothing to other aspects of her life, such as the creation of a nurturing home or the development of her skills and talents.

Diligence and resourcefulness:The verse implies that the virtuous woman does not rely solely on others for her clothing needs. Instead, she takes the initiative to create her own coverings. This highlights her industriousness and resourcefulness. It demonstrates her ability to maximize her talents and make the most of the resources available to her.

Overall, Proverbs 31:22 showcases the virtues of a woman who takes care of herself, appreciates beauty, and manages her resources wisely. It encourages women to develop their skills, be creative, and take pride in their appearance without neglecting other important aspects of life. It also emphasizes the value of diligence, resourcefulness, and attention to detail.
