Jeremiah 5:21
Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:
Jeremiah 5:21 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah delivered this message on God’s behalf to the people of Judah before the Babylonian exile. The nation had repeatedly ignored the warnings of the prophets, and Jeremiah’s words here expose the spiritual condition that made judgment inevitable.
Meaning
The opening call, “Hear now this,” is an urgent summons to pay attention. Yet the people are described as “foolish” and “without understanding.” In Hebrew, the word translated “understanding” can also mean “heart,” suggesting that their entire inner being had failed to respond to God. Their folly was not mere ignorance; it was a stubborn refusal to grasp the seriousness of their situation and turn back to Him.
The verse then uses sharp irony: they have eyes, yet do not see, and ears, yet do not hear. Physically they could see and hear, but spiritually they were blind and deaf to God’s truth. This condition was not accidental. Through persistent disobedience, they had become hardened and indifferent, unable to perceive the reality of their sin or the urgency of His call to repentance.
Their blindness and deafness stood in stark contrast to the idols they served, which had eyes and ears but could not perceive (Psalm 115:4-8). The people had the law and the prophets—the very means of light and knowledge—yet they remained ignorant and stubborn. This verse upbraids their folly and lack of common sense, showing how far they had fallen from the wisdom God had given them.
Application
This verse remains a searching reminder for us today. We must examine our own hearts to see whether we, too, have grown spiritually blind or deaf. It is possible to hear the words of Scripture and yet not truly listen, to look at our circumstances and yet miss what God is saying. We are called to be attentive to His Word, responsive to His guidance, and quick to repent when He exposes sin.
In summary, Jeremiah 5:21 rebukes spiritual blindness and deafness, urging us to cultivate a heart that sees God’s truth and hears His voice.
