Jeremiah 5:22
Fear ye not me? saith the Lord: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
Jeremiah 5:22 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah delivered this message to the people of Judah during a time of deep spiritual and moral decline. The nation had turned to idolatry and disobedience, and God, through the prophet, confronted their rebellion. In this verse, the Lord challenges their lack of reverence, asking why they do not fear Him or tremble at His presence.
Meaning
The verse opens with two rhetorical questions: “Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence?” These questions expose the people’s failure to honor God as they should. The fear and trembling called for here are not mere terror, but a reverent awe that recognizes God’s majesty, holiness, and authority as Creator and Lord.
God then points to His sovereign control over creation. He has placed the sand as the boundary of the sea by a perpetual decree, so that the sea cannot pass it. Though the waves toss themselves and roar, they cannot prevail or cross over. This imagery shows that God’s power is absolute over the natural world, which He governs by His word. The sea, often a symbol of chaos and danger, is held in check by something as seemingly weak as sand, underscoring that God’s power does not depend on impressive means.
Biblical connections
The contrast is striking: the sea obeys its boundary, but Judah has not obeyed God’s law. Creation responds to its Creator’s decree, yet the people, made in His image, have turned away. This connection highlights both God’s power and human rebellion, calling for a response of reverent fear and obedience.
Application
This passage serves as a call to repentance and a reminder of God’s majesty. It challenges us to examine our own attitudes: Do we truly fear and reverence God? Do we recognize His authority and power in our lives? The verse invites us to humbly submit to God and acknowledge His sovereignty over all things.
Reflection
Jeremiah 5:22 reminds us that God’s dominion over creation is not distant or abstract. The same God who sets the sand as the sea’s boundary is present and active in our lives. Our response should be one of awe, worship, and trust in His rightful place as the Almighty.
