Ezekiel 13:1
“And the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,”
Context:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. The prophet Ezekiel was among the Jewish exiles in Babylon during the time of the Babylonian captivity. In this chapter, Ezekiel is delivering a message from the Lord to the false prophets of Israel, who were deceiving the people with their false visions and lying divinations.
In Ezekiel 13:1, the verse begins with the phrase “And the word of the Lord came unto me.” This phrase is a common introduction in the book of Ezekiel, indicating that the prophet is about to receive a message directly from God. Ezekiel was a chosen vessel to deliver God’s word to the people of Israel, both those in exile and those still in the land.
Application: As we study this verse, we can draw some important principles from it:
- God speaks to His chosen messengers:Just as God spoke to Ezekiel, He communicates with His chosen servants today. God uses various means to speak to His people, including His Word (the Bible), prayer, dreams, visions, and the prompting of the Holy Spirit. It is essential for us to be open and receptive to hearing from God.
- God’s Word is authoritative:When the word of the Lord came to Ezekiel, it carried weight and authority. As believers, we should recognize the authority of God’s Word and submit ourselves to its teachings. The Bible is the inspired Word of God, and it provides us with guidance, correction, and instruction for our lives.
- False prophets and deception:In this chapter, Ezekiel confronts the false prophets who were misleading the people with their lies and false visions. It serves as a reminder for us to be discerning and cautious about false teachings and misleading messages in our own time. We should test everything against the truth of God’s Word and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to avoid being led astray.
- The importance of true prophecy:In contrast to the false prophets, Ezekiel’s prophecies were genuine messages from God. True prophecies are rooted in the truth of God’s Word, and they align with His character and purposes. We should seek after true prophecy that leads us closer to God and encourages us to live in accordance with His will.
In conclusion, Ezekiel 13:1 highlights the importance of receiving and adhering to the true word of the Lord while remaining vigilant against false teachings and deception. By studying this verse and its surrounding context, we can gain insight into God’s desire for His people to discern truth from falsehood and faithfully follow His instructions.
