Ezekiel 33:26

Listen to this article

“Ye stand upon your sword, ye work abomination, and ye defile every one his neighbour’s wife: and shall ye possess the land?”

This verse is part of the book of Ezekiel, which contains prophecies and messages from God to the Israelites during their exile in Babylon.

The prophet Ezekiel was called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Israel, urging them to turn away from their sinful ways and return to Him.

In Ezekiel 33:26, God is addressing the rebellious and wicked behavior of the Israelites.

Let’s break down the verse to understand its meaning:

“Ye stand upon your sword”:This phrase suggests that the Israelites relied on their military strength and prowess for their security and protection. It implies that they were placing their trust in their own abilities rather than relying on God.

“Ye work abomination”:The Israelites were engaging in detestable and sinful practices that were contrary to God’s commandments. They had turned away from worshiping the one true God and were involved in idolatry and other wicked deeds.

“Ye defile every one his neighbour’s wife”:This indicates that the people were committing adultery and engaging in sexual immorality. They were not respecting the sanctity of marriage or the boundaries set by God.

“And shall ye possess the land?”:God questions whether the Israelites, with their sinful behaviour and disobedience, have the right to possess the promised land. This statement serves as a warning and a reminder that the blessings of God are contingent upon their obedience and faithfulness.

Overall, Ezekiel 33:26 is a stern rebuke from God to the Israelites, highlighting their unfaithfulness and wickedness. It emphasises the importance of obedience to God’s commandments and the consequences that arise from turning away from Him.

The verse challenges the Israelites to reflect on their actions and reconsider their ways, reminding them that true possession of the promised land is reserved for those who follow God’s will.
