Ezekiel 34:24
And I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David a prince among them; I the Lord have spoken it.
Ezekiel 34:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse stands within a larger oracle in which God confronts Israel’s leaders, called shepherds, for neglecting and exploiting the people. Their failure scattered the flock and left them vulnerable. In response, God declares that He Himself will become the true Shepherd of His people.
Meaning
God’s promise, “I the LORD will be their God,” reaffirms His covenant relationship with Israel. Despite the failure of human leaders, He assures His people that He will care for them directly. The title “my servant David” points to the Davidic covenant and the coming ideal ruler from David’s line. In its immediate context, this is not a resurrection of the historical King David, but a promise of a future Davidic king who would shepherd God’s people rightly. The Hebrew term translated “prince” (nasi) is used elsewhere in Ezekiel for a leader, and in Ezekiel 37:24-25 the same “servant David” is called “king” and “prince forever,” showing the consistency of this promise.
Biblical connections
This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David, who is the good shepherd and the eternal King. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus offers salvation and eternal life to all who believe in Him. When God says that David will be a prince among them, it symbolizes the position of authority and leadership that the Messiah will hold—He will not only be the Shepherd but also a ruling prince, guiding His people with wisdom and righteousness.
Application
Ezekiel 34:24 speaks of God’s faithfulness and His commitment to care for His people. It assures believers that God’s word is certain and will be fulfilled, for the verse closes with the divine oath, “I the LORD have spoken it.” This teaches that God alone is the ultimate Shepherd and King, and that human leadership is accountable to Him.
Reflection
Consider the comfort in knowing that even when earthly leaders fail, God remains the faithful Shepherd who keeps His covenant promises. Trust in Jesus, the promised Son of David, who leads His people with love and compassion and provides guidance, protection, and salvation to all who trust in Him.
