Daniel 7:18

But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.

Daniel 7:18 (KJV)

The book of Daniel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written during the Babylonian captivity. In Daniel 7, the prophet receives a vision of four great beasts that represent powerful earthly kingdoms. These kingdoms oppress God’s people for a time, but the vision then turns to a heavenly courtroom. The Ancient of Days, God Himself, sits in judgment, and the Son of Man, who represents the Messiah, Jesus Christ, is given dominion and an everlasting kingdom. Daniel 7:18 comes as the interpretation of this vision, promising that the saints of the most High will receive that same kingdom.

The phrase “saints of the most High” refers to God’s faithful people, those set apart for Him and loyal to His ways. The verse says they “shall take the kingdom,” meaning they will receive authority and rulership in God’s eternal kingdom. This is not a present earthly rule but a future reality established after God’s judgment. The saints will not only take the kingdom but also “possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever,” emphasizing the everlasting nature of their inheritance. Their reign is a participation in the Messiah’s own reign, not an independent achievement. The certainty of this promise rests on the preceding vision, where God gives dominion to the Son of Man, who secures victory for His people.

This verse connects to the broader biblical teaching that believers share in Christ’s reign. The saints’ inheritance is corporate: the kingdom is given to the community of the faithful, not just to isolated individuals. The kingdom here is not merely a place but the active rule of God, which the saints will inherit and administer. This hope is meant to encourage perseverance, knowing that the trials of this age are temporary and that God’s purposes will prevail.

  • Seek God’s kingdom: Jesus taught His disciples to seek first the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Daniel 7:18 reminds us of the eternal significance of God’s kingdom and encourages us to prioritize seeking and serving it in our lives.

  • Endurance in trials: The book of Daniel was written during a time of exile and persecution. As believers, we may face challenges and opposition, but knowing that we will ultimately possess the kingdom forever helps us endure and remain steadfast in faith.

  • Faithful stewardship: Recognizing that we will have a role in God’s eternal kingdom inspires us to be faithful stewards of the resources, talents, and opportunities He has given us, using them for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom.

  • Focus on the eternal: In a world filled with temporary pursuits, Daniel 7:18 calls us to fix our eyes on the eternal. We should live with an eternal perspective, investing in what has lasting value and aligning our goals with God’s kingdom.

Earthly kingdoms, no matter how powerful, are transient. Those who align with them will ultimately be overshadowed by God’s eternal kingdom. Therefore, believers are called to live as citizens of that coming kingdom, with loyalty to God above all earthly allegiances. The promise of possessing the kingdom forever gives hope and assurance of our eternal destiny, reminding us that our present trials are temporary and our ultimate reward is an everlasting inheritance in God’s kingdom.
