Daniel 7:16
I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things.
Daniel 7:16 (KJV)
Context
Daniel 7 records a night vision given to the prophet Daniel concerning future events and the rise and fall of empires. In this vision, Daniel sees four great beasts emerging from the sea, each representing a different kingdom. Verse 16 stands as a bridge between the vision itself and its explanation, showing that God does not leave His people without understanding.
Meaning
In this verse, Daniel approaches one of the divine beings or angels who stood by in the vision. He asks for the truth of all this, expressing his desire to know the true meaning of the things he has witnessed. The phrase “the truth of all this” contrasts the symbolic images with their real substance and meaning. Daniel’s humility and curiosity demonstrate his earnestness in seeking knowledge and understanding. The angel responds to his inquiry and provides the interpretation in the subsequent verses, explaining that the four beasts represent four kings or kingdoms that will arise on the earth, and revealing details about their ultimate judgment before the Ancient of Days.
Biblical connections
Daniel’s approach models the proper posture of a learner: coming near, asking, and receiving instruction. His example teaches us the importance of recognizing our limitations and seeking divine guidance in understanding spiritual matters. When faced with perplexing spiritual realities, believers should seek understanding from God and His messengers, trusting that He will make known the interpretation.
Application
Daniel’s attitude of seeking truth and understanding has valuable applications for believers today. We can follow his example by approaching God with humility, diligently studying His Word, and seeking His guidance. This can involve prayer, studying commentaries, seeking wise counsel, and engaging in meaningful discussions with others. As we seek truth, God will reveal Himself to us, deepen our understanding of His plans, and provide insight into the world around us.
Reflection
Daniel’s willingness to seek the truth and approach the divine being resulted in the interpretation being made known to him. Similarly, when we approach God with a sincere heart and a thirst for knowledge, He will provide understanding and insights through His Word, the Holy Spirit, and various means of guidance.
