I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.

Daniel says he was “grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body.” The Hebrew phrase rendered “grieved in my spirit” indicates deep inner anguish, not mere sadness. The phrase “in the midst of my body” (literally “in the midst of my sheath“) emphasizes that this distress penetrated to the core of his physical being. The “visions of my head” refers to the night visions of chapter 7, which depicted four great beasts, a boastful little horn, and the Ancient of Days. Daniel’s reaction is one of profound disturbance, not curiosity or excitement. This response is consistent with other prophets who were overwhelmed by divine revelation.

Daniel’s grief is not unbelief but a faithful, human response to the overwhelming nature of God’s disclosed purposes. Despite the unsettling nature of the vision, Daniel’s faith in God remained steadfast, as he continued to serve and trust in Him throughout his life.
