Daniel 9:3
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
Daniel 9:3 (KJV)
Context
Daniel 9 records Daniel’s prayer and confession for Israel during the Babylonian captivity. In the previous verse, Daniel understood from Jeremiah’s prophecies that the seventy years of Jerusalem’s desolation were nearing their end (Daniel 9:2). That understanding moved him to seek the Lord with extraordinary earnestness, as this verse describes.
Meaning
Daniel “set his face unto the Lord God.” This phrase signifies resolute determination and focused intention. He was not offering casual or routine prayer; he deliberately turned toward God, the sovereign Lord. His seeking was expressed “by prayer and supplications“—prayer being communication with God, and supplications being earnest, specific requests for mercy and help.
Daniel accompanied his prayers with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. Fasting, abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose, demonstrated his seriousness, humility, and desire for guidance or repentance. Sackcloth, a coarse material, and ashes were symbols of mourning, repentance, and contrition. Through these outward acts, Daniel expressed deep repentance and acknowledgment of Israel’s sins.
Biblical connections
Daniel’s actions show that true seeking of God involves the whole person: a determined will, heartfelt prayer, and humble outward expression. His example connects the remembrance of God’s promises with fervent, humble intercession.
Application
Daniel’s devotion challenges believers to approach God with the same earnestness. Prayer and supplication remain essential for communicating with God and presenting specific requests. Fasting and other expressions of humility can deepen our dependence on Him and our repentance. Daniel’s example highlights the importance of sincere, wholehearted seeking of God’s presence and guidance.
Reflection
Daniel’s posture—face set toward God, accompanied by fasting and ashes—reveals a heart fully engaged. His prayer was not merely words but a complete offering of himself. Believers today can follow this model when seeking God’s favor and forgiveness, remembering that He responds to those who earnestly seek Him.
