Daniel 9:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments.”

Context:The book of Daniel is set during the time of the Babylonian captivity when the Israelites were exiled from their land. In this particular chapter, Daniel is praying and confessing the sins of the Israelites, seeking God’s mercy and restoration.

Acknowledging Sin:In this verse, Daniel acknowledges the sins of the people of Israel. He uses several terms to describe their wrongdoing: “sinned,” “committed iniquity,” “done wickedly,” and “rebelled.” This language emphasizes the gravity of their disobedience against God’s commandments.

Departing from God’s Precepts and Judgments:Daniel identifies the specific ways in which the Israelites have transgressed against God. They have departed from His precepts, which refer to His teachings, instructions, and moral guidelines found in the Law. Additionally, they have departed from His judgments, which include His righteous decrees and laws.

Recognizing Personal and Corporate Responsibility:By using the pronoun “we,” Daniel includes himself among those who have sinned. He doesn’t distance himself from the collective guilt but takes responsibility for the sins of the entire nation. This demonstrates his humility and genuine repentance before God.

Application:This verse serves as a reminder that acknowledging and confessing our sins before God is an important step in seeking forgiveness and restoration. It also highlights the importance of recognizing personal and collective responsibility for our actions. We should strive to align ourselves with God’s precepts and judgments, following His commands and seeking to live a righteous life.

  • Overall:Daniel 9:5 emphasizes the need for confession, repentance, and taking responsibility for our actions. It encourages us to turn away from sin and seek God’s forgiveness and guidance, aligning our lives with His precepts and judgments.
