Daniel 12:4
But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Daniel 12:4 (KJV)
Context
The book of Daniel focuses on the life and visions of the prophet Daniel during the Babylonian captivity. In the preceding chapters, Daniel receives prophetic visions of future empires and events leading to the end times.
Meaning
Daniel is told to “shut up the words, and seal the book.” This means the prophecies are to be preserved and kept secure, not immediately understood. Their full meaning will be revealed “to the time of the end.” The sealing does not mean the book is hidden forever; it is protected until the appointed time when its message will be opened and understood.
The phrase “many shall run to and fro” can be interpreted as people seeking knowledge and understanding. In the end times, this suggests an increase in human activity and exploration, possibly including advancements in travel and transportation. “Knowledge shall be increased” points to a general growth in understanding, especially insight into the prophecies of Daniel and the Scriptures as the end approaches.
Biblical connections
This verse connects with the broader biblical theme that God reveals truth in His timing. The sealing of the book until the time of the end parallels the principle that some prophetic truths remain veiled until their fulfillment draws near.
Application
Believers are called to study the Scriptures diligently and seek wisdom from God, trusting that He will provide insight into His plans and purposes as the end times approach. The verse encourages faithfulness and perseverance, even when understanding is incomplete, knowing that God’s purposes will be accomplished.
Reflection
Daniel 12:4 assures us that God’s plan is certain and that He will reveal truth in His perfect timing. It invites us to wait patiently, to keep searching the Scriptures, and to trust that the knowledge God grants will be sufficient for the days ahead.
