Matthew 1:18
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
Matthew 1:18 (KJV)
Context
Matthew opens his Gospel by introducing the birth of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. The phrase “on this wise” signals that he will now explain the remarkable circumstances of that birth. Mary is described as espoused to Joseph, meaning she was legally bound to him in a Jewish betrothal, a stage as binding as marriage though they had not yet come together physically.
Meaning
Before Joseph and Mary came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. This is the clear testimony of the virgin birth: Mary conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, without human involvement. The Holy Spirit overshadowed her, enabling her to conceive while remaining a virgin, so that Jesus would be both fully God and fully man, born without sin. This miraculous conception sets Jesus apart from every other human and affirms His divine nature and origin. The Greek word for “birth” (genesis) includes both conception and bringing forth, so the account covers the entire miraculous event. The phrase “before they came together” emphasizes that the conception was not by human means, highlighting divine intervention.
Biblical connections
This verse sets the stage for Joseph’s dilemma and the angelic announcement in the following verses. Matthew later explicitly connects this event to the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, which speaks of a virgin conceiving and bearing a son named Immanuel, as recorded in Matthew 1:22-23. The Holy Spirit’s role in the conception underscores the divine origin of Jesus, fulfilling God’s sovereign plan to bring salvation to His people.
Application
Mary’s response demonstrates profound faith and obedience. Her willingness to submit to God’s purpose, despite potential social and personal challenges, serves as an inspiring example for believers. It emphasizes the importance of trusting and obeying God’s will, even when His plans seem impossible or costly. Likewise, Joseph’s dilemma, resolved in the following verses, shows God’s guidance and the necessity of faithful obedience.
Reflection
Matthew 1:18 sets the stage for the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, emphasizing divine intervention and the exemplary faith of Mary. It underscores the supernatural origin of Jesus and His divine purpose as the Savior of humanity. For believers, this passage teaches the reality of God’s supernatural intervention in human history and calls for faith in the miraculous and submission to His will.
