Matthew 2:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:52

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”

Context:In the preceding verses, we learn that the wise men, who were from the East, had seen a star in the sky that signaled the birth of the King of the Jews. They traveled to Jerusalem and inquired about the whereabouts of the newborn king. This news troubled King Herod and all Jerusalem. Herod gathered the chief priests and scribes, who informed him that the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, as prophesied by the prophet Micah.

Verse Analysis:

“When they saw the star” – The wise men had been following the star that had appeared in the sky. This star was a supernatural sign from God that guided them to the location of Jesus.

“they rejoiced” – The sight of the star filled the wise men with joy. They recognized it as a confirmation of God’s guidance and a sign of the fulfillment of the prophecies concerning the birth of the King of the Jews.

“with exceeding great joy” – The phrase “exceeding great joy” emphasizes the intensity and depth of their joy. It suggests that their joy was not ordinary but rather an overwhelming, profound, and unparalleled joy. The wise men were overjoyed at the prospect of meeting the Messiah, the Savior who had been promised.

Meaning and Application:

  • 1. God’s guidance:The appearance of the star and the joy it brought to the wise men illustrate God’s guidance in their journey. It signifies that God reveals Himself to those who seek Him diligently and follow His leading. This reminds us to trust in God’s guidance in our own lives, knowing that He can lead us to the right path.
  • 2. The fulfillment of prophecy:The joy of the wise men also arises from their recognition that the prophecies concerning the birth of the King of the Jews were being fulfilled. It reminds us of the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promises. We can take comfort and find joy in the fact that God keeps His Word and remains faithful to His covenant.
  • 3. The joy of encountering Jesus:The wise men’s joy reached its peak when they finally encountered Jesus. Similarly, encountering Jesus in our own lives can bring us exceeding great joy. Jesus is the source of true joy and fulfillment. As we seek Him, worship Him, and grow in our relationship with Him, we can experience a joy that surpasses all understanding.
  • 4. Responding to God’s revelation:The wise men’s joy and their subsequent worship of Jesus teaches us the importance of responding to God’s revelation. When God reveals Himself to us through His Word, His creation, or His Spirit, it should evoke a response of joy, worship, and obedience.
