Matthew 13:19

When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Matthew 13:19 (KJV)

Matthew 13 contains the Parable of the Sower, in which Jesus teaches the crowd about the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. In this verse, Jesus explains the first type of soil, identifying the seed as the word of the kingdom and the wayside soil as the person who hears but does not understand.

The word of the kingdom is the message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ, proclaiming the arrival of God’s reign. The wayside soil represents a hardened heart, like a path where seed cannot penetrate. When a person hears the word but does not understand it, the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in the heart. The heart is the place where the seed is sown, indicating that the issue involves the inner person’s reception of the message, not merely intellectual comprehension.

The central problem for this first type of hearer is the lack of understanding. Because the word is not understood, it does not take root, leaving the hearer vulnerable to the enemy’s theft. Understanding the word of God involves spiritual insight and discernment, not just mental agreement. When the truth of God’s word is grasped, it has the power to transform lives, shape character, and guide actions.

This verse is the first of four explanations Jesus gives for the parable, contrasting with the rocky ground (Matthew 13:20-21), the thorny ground (Matthew 13:22), and the good ground (Matthew 13:23). The immediate context (Matthew 13:18) shows Jesus calling his disciples to hear the parable’s meaning, emphasizing the importance of rightly understanding the word.

This verse reminds believers of the spiritual battle they face. The enemy seeks to prevent the word from taking root in the heart. To guard against this, believers should cultivate a receptive heart, seek understanding through prayer and study, and rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Examining one’s heart to ensure it is not hardened or indifferent toward God’s word is essential, allowing the word to take root and produce fruit in life.

  • Matthew 13:19 emphasizes the importance of understanding the word of God. A hardened heart that fails to grasp the truth becomes vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks. Believers should strive to cultivate a receptive heart and actively seek understanding, allowing the word to take root and produce fruit.
