Matthew 13:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:50

“When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.”

Context:Matthew 13 is known as the “Parable of the Sower.” In this chapter, Jesus teaches the crowd using various parables to explain the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven. The parables serve as illustrations of spiritual truths, and they convey important lessons about the reception of God’s Word.

The Word of the Kingdom:In this verse, Jesus speaks about “the word of the kingdom.” It refers to the message of salvation, the gospel, which proclaims the arrival of God’s kingdom and the way to enter it through faith in Jesus Christ.

The Wayside Soil:Jesus describes the person who hears the word but does not understand it as the one who received seed by the wayside. The wayside refers to the path or road where people walk. This soil represents the condition of the heart that is hardened and unreceptive to the Word of God.

The Wicked One:Jesus explains that when someone hears the Word but fails to understand it, the wicked one (Satan) comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. Satan seeks to hinder the reception and understanding of the Word, preventing it from taking root and producing fruit in the person’s life.

Lack of Understanding:The key issue in this verse is the lack of understanding. Understanding the Word of God is crucial for it to have an impact in a person’s life. Without comprehension, the seed of God’s Word cannot penetrate the heart, and it becomes susceptible to being stolen away.

Importance of Understanding:Understanding the Word of God involves more than mere intellectual comprehension; it requires spiritual insight and discernment. When we understand the truth of God’s Word, it has the power to transform our lives, shape our character, and guide our actions.

Guarding against the Enemy:This verse reminds us of the spiritual battle we face. The enemy seeks to prevent the Word of God from taking root in our hearts. To guard against this, we should cultivate a heart that is receptive to God’s Word, seek understanding through prayer and study, and rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

Application:As believers, we should examine our hearts to ensure they are not hardened or indifferent toward God’s Word. We should seek to understand and internalize the teachings of the Bible, allowing it to shape our beliefs and actions. By doing so, we can prevent the enemy from robbing us of the transformative power of God’s Word.

  • In summary, Matthew 13:19 emphasizes the importance of understanding the Word of God. A hardened heart that fails to grasp the truth of God’s Word becomes vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks. As followers of Christ, we should strive to cultivate a receptive heart and actively seek understanding, allowing the Word to take root and produce fruit in our lives.
