Mark 9:4

And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses: and they were talking with Jesus.

Mark 9:4 (KJV)

Mark 9:4 belongs to the Transfiguration account, a turning point in the Gospel of Mark. Jesus had just predicted His suffering and resurrection, and He took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There He was transfigured before them, and Elijah and Moses appeared, talking with Jesus.

The presence of Moses and Elijah carries deep significance. Moses represents the Law given on Mount Sinai, and Elijah represents the prophets. Their appearance together with Jesus shows that the Law and the Prophets point to Him and find their fulfillment in Him. The word “appeared” indicates a supernatural manifestation, not a mere vision. That they were “talking with Jesus” reveals personal, intimate communion between these heavenly visitors and the Son of God.

Luke’s account clarifies that Moses and Elijah spoke with Jesus about His impending “departure” at Jerusalem (Luke 9:31), which points to His crucifixion and the completion of God’s saving purpose. This event also recalls Malachi 4:5-6, which foretold Elijah’s coming before the Messiah. Jesus later connected that prophecy to John the Baptist, saying John came “in the spirit and power of Elijah” (Matthew 11:14; Mark 9:13).

This passage affirms Jesus’ divine identity and His fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. It also calls believers to heed Jesus as the ultimate authority, for the Father’s voice from the cloud commands, “Hear him” (Mark 9:7). The Transfiguration offers a foretaste of the coming kingdom and the glory that awaits believers in Christ.

Mark 9:4 shows the seamless continuity of God’s redemptive plan from the Old Testament to the New. Moses and Elijah appear not as rivals to Jesus, but as witnesses to Him. Their conversation with Jesus reminds us that all Scripture bears witness to Christ, and that He is greater than the Law and the Prophets.
