Luke 11:21

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in Luke 11 where Jesus is teaching about prayer and the power of God’s kingdom. He begins by teaching his disciples the Lord’s Prayer and then goes on to emphasize the importance of persistence in prayer.

Meaning and Analysis:

Strong man armed:In this context, the strong man refers to Satan or demonic forces. The strong man is well-prepared and protected, armed to keep his palace, which represents the domain or influence he possesses.

Palace and goods:The palace symbolizes the stronghold or domain of the strong man, which he guards and protects. The goods represent the people or possessions under his control.

Peace:When the strong man is in control, his goods are in a state of peace, meaning they remain under his dominion without interference or opposition.

Application:

  • Recognising the enemy:This verse reminds us of the existence of spiritual forces that oppose God’s kingdom and seek to keep people captive. It’s essential to be aware of the tactics of the enemy and not be ignorant of his schemes.
  • The power of Christ:The verse sets the stage for the following verses (Luke 11:22-26), where Jesus speaks about how He can overcome the strong man and plunder his goods. Jesus is the stronger one who can defeat Satan and liberate people from his influence.
  • Prayer and spiritual warfare:This passage highlights the significance of prayer in the spiritual battle. Through persistent and fervent prayer, we align ourselves with God’s power and authority to overcome the enemy and bring freedom to those under his influence.
  • Standing firm in faith:Believers are called to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes. With Christ on our side, we can resist the devil and his temptations, knowing that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Conclusion:

Luke 11:21 reminds us of the reality of spiritual warfare and the existence of an enemy who seeks to keep people in bondage. However, through the power of Christ and persistent prayer, we can overcome the strong man and experience freedom in Christ. It encourages us to be vigilant, prayerful, and firm in our faith as we engage in the ongoing battle against the forces of darkness.
