Luke 11:37

Posted on 18 May at 14:40

“And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.”

In this verse, we see Jesus being invited by a Pharisee to have a meal with him. This event takes place during Jesus’ ministry, where He often engaged with various people, including religious leaders, to teach and share the truth of God’s kingdom.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to examine the context and the following verses. In Luke 11:37-54, Jesus addresses the Pharisees directly and delivers a series of rebukes and warnings. The focus of His teachings shifts from external practices to the internal condition of the heart.

The Pharisees were known for their strict adherence to religious laws and traditions. They placed great emphasis on external rituals and appearances, while neglecting matters of the heart. Jesus often challenged their hypocrisy and exposed their misguided priorities.

By accepting the invitation to dine with the Pharisee, Jesus enters into their space and provides an opportunity for dialogue and instruction. The act of sharing a meal was significant in Jewish culture, often symbolising fellowship and acceptance. However, Jesus uses this occasion to bring a deeper message to the Pharisees.

In the following verses, Jesus criticises the Pharisees for their outward focus and their neglect of justice and love. He points out their obsession with external cleanliness while neglecting inner purity. Jesus contrasts their meticulous attention to washing dishes with their neglect of justice and the love of God.

Through this encounter, Jesus highlights the importance of true righteousness and the need for internal transformation. He emphasises that it is not enough to be outwardly religious or to perform rituals; true righteousness involves a genuine heart transformation and a sincere love for God and others.

This passage challenges us to examine our own lives and motives. It reminds us that our relationship with God is not based on outward appearances or religious rituals alone. Instead, it requires a genuine commitment to God, an inward transformation of our hearts, and a love that extends to others.

In summary, Luke 11:37 captures the account of Jesus being invited to dine with a Pharisee. This event sets the stage for Jesus’ teachings on true righteousness and the importance of inner transformation rather than mere external religiosity. It serves as a reminder for us to focus on cultivating a genuine relationship with God and expressing His love through our actions.
