Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 1:8 (KJV)

Acts 1:8 comes from Jesus’ final words to His apostles before His ascension. In the preceding verses, the disciples ask whether He will restore the kingdom to Israel, and Jesus redirects their attention from speculative timing to the mission of witness. This verse serves as the hinge between His resurrection appearances and His ascension, setting the agenda for the entire book of Acts.

Jesus first assures the disciples that they will receive power. This power is not political or miraculous in a general sense; it is specifically for the task of witness. It originates from the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus promised to send after His departure. The Spirit empowers believers with spiritual strength, guidance, boldness, and the ability to fulfill the mission entrusted to them.

The phrase “witnesses unto me” emphasizes personal testimony to the risen Christ, not merely abstract teaching. The Holy Spirit’s coming is the enabling condition for this mission. The same power that raised Christ is at work in believers, linking the Spirit’s empowerment to the resurrection.

The geographical progression—Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost part of the earth—reflects the historical expansion of the early church as recorded in Acts, from the Jewish center to the Gentile mission. The “uttermost part of the earth” anticipates the global scope of the gospel, which becomes a major theme in Acts.

For today’s believers, Acts 1:8 remains both a historical account and a call to action. The same Holy Spirit who empowered the first disciples is available to us, equipping us to be witnesses in our own communities and to support missions that carry the gospel to the ends of the earth. The order of locations demonstrates the universal scope of the gospel and the expanding mission of the church, beginning where we are and reaching outward.

Jesus’ commission to the disciples was not limited to the first century. The mission continues through all believers, empowered by the Spirit. The kingdom’s advance is tied to Spirit-empowered witness, and every believer has a role in this global mission.
