Romans 16:19

Posted on 18 May at 14:14
Listen to this article

“For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.”

Context:This verse is found in the concluding chapter of the book of Romans, where the apostle Paul is wrapping up his letter to the church in Rome. In this verse, Paul expresses his joy and appreciation for the obedience of the Roman Christians, but he also exhorts them to be discerning and wise in their understanding of what is good and their approach to evil.

Obedience and Its Impact:Paul begins by acknowledging that the obedience of the Roman believers has become well‑known or famous among all men. This obedience likely refers to their faithfulness in following the teachings and instructions of God and the apostles. It is a commendation of their commitment to living out their faith in a way that brings honor to God and reflects positively on the Christian community.

Wisdom in Good:Paul then advises the believers to be wise or discerning regarding that which is good. This means having a deep understanding of God’s will and purpose, seeking wisdom and discernment in making decisions and discerning between what is good and what is not. It involves cultivating a godly perspective and making choices that align with God’s principles and values.

Simplicity Concerning Evil:In contrast to being wise in what is good, Paul encourages the Romans to be simple or innocent concerning evil. This doesn’t mean being naive or ignorant of evil but rather maintaining a purity and simplicity of heart that is not entangled in or influenced by the ways of evil. It involves avoiding the temptation to participate in sinful activities or be swayed by deceptive teachings or ideologies.

Overall, Romans 16:19 emphasizes the importance of obedience to God and the need for believers to exercise wisdom and discernment in their pursuit of what is good while remaining uncompromising and innocent in the face of evil. It serves as a reminder to Christians to be vigilant and discerning in their daily lives, constantly seeking to align their actions and thoughts with God’s truth and purpose.
