Romans 16:19
For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
Romans 16:19 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in the concluding chapter of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome. He has just warned the believers about those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine they have learned (Romans 16:17-18). Now he expresses joy over their well-known obedience, while urging them to remain discerning.
Meaning
Paul begins by acknowledging that the obedience of the Roman Christians has become known abroad among all men. This obedience refers to their faithful response to the gospel and their submission to the teachings of God and the apostles. Their reputation for faithfulness was widespread, bringing honor to God and encouragement to the Christian community.
Paul then exhorts them to be wise unto that which is good. This wisdom is not mere intellectual knowledge but a deep, practical understanding of God’s will. It involves discerning what is truly good, making decisions that align with God’s principles, and cultivating a godly perspective in daily life.
In contrast, Paul urges them to be simple concerning evil. The Greek word translated “simple” conveys the idea of being innocent, guileless, or unacquainted with evil. This does not mean being naive or ignorant of evil’s existence, but rather maintaining a purity of heart that is not entangled with or influenced by evil. It means having nothing to do with evil and not being gullible toward deceptive teachings or smooth-talking false teachers.
Biblical connections
This verse connects directly to the warning in Romans 16:17-18 about those who cause divisions and deceive the hearts of the simple. Paul’s desire is that the Roman believers would be alert and not gullible, ensuring that every “good” thing they embrace is genuine.
Application
For believers today, this verse is a reminder to cultivate a reputation for obedience that is evident to others. It also calls us to grow in discernment, actively seeking wisdom in what is good while remaining uncompromising and innocent in the face of evil. We are to be vigilant in our daily lives, constantly aligning our actions and thoughts with God’s truth.
Reflection
Paul’s joy over the Roman believers’ obedience is tempered by his concern for their continued growth. Even those who are faithful need to be reminded to stay wise and simple. This verse encourages us to examine our own hearts: Are we known for our obedience? Are we growing in wisdom toward good? Are we remaining innocent and untainted by evil?
