Listen to this article

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

Context:The Apostle Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians to address various issues and divisions within the church. In Chapter 2, Paul emphasizes the wisdom of God compared to the wisdom of the world and explains the difference between those who are spiritual and those who are natural or worldly.

The Natural Man:The verse begins by referring to the “natural man.” This refers to an individual who has not experienced spiritual rebirth or who is not guided by the Holy Spirit. The natural man relies solely on human wisdom and understanding, which can be limited and influenced by worldly values.

Rejection of Spiritual Things:The natural man does not receive or accept the things of the Spirit of God. The “things of the Spirit of God” include the teachings of Scripture, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the deep truths of God’s wisdom. The natural man finds these things foolish or nonsensical because they do not align with his worldly perspective.

Spiritual Discernment:The verse explains that the reason the natural man rejects spiritual things is that they are spiritually discerned. Spiritual discernment refers to the ability to understand and perceive spiritual truths through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is a gift given to those who have a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

The Role of the Holy Spirit:To understand and receive the things of the Spirit of God, one must have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them. The Holy Spirit illuminates the truths of God’s Word and empowers believers to comprehend and embrace spiritual realities. Without the Holy Spirit, spiritual truths can seem foolish or beyond comprehension.

Application:

  • Seek the Holy Spirit:If we desire to understand and receive the things of the Spirit, we must actively seek a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We need to invite the Holy Spirit into our lives, allowing Him to guide and illuminate our understanding of God’s Word.
  • Recognize worldly wisdom:The verse highlights the limitations of worldly wisdom. As Christians, we should be cautious not to rely solely on human understanding but rather seek God’s wisdom in all things. Worldly wisdom may not align with God’s truth and can hinder our ability to grasp spiritual realities.
  • Pray for spiritual discernment:We should regularly pray for the Holy Spirit to grant us spiritual discernment. This enables us to understand and apply the deep truths of God’s Word to our lives. Spiritual discernment helps us navigate life’s challenges, make wise decisions, and live in alignment with God’s will.

Remember that the Bible study provides a brief exploration of the verse. Further study of the surrounding context and related passages can deepen your understanding of this verse and its implications.
