1 Corinthians 3:16

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?

1 Corinthians 3:16 (KJV)

Paul writes to a divided church in Corinth, where believers were aligning themselves with different leaders and losing sight of their common foundation in Christ. In the preceding verses, he describes the church as God’s building, with Christ as the only foundation. Now he turns to a striking truth: the Corinthians themselves are God’s temple, and the Spirit of God dwells in them.

The temple in the Old Testament was the sacred place where God’s presence dwelt among His people. After Christ’s death and resurrection, that dwelling place shifted from a physical building to the people of God. Paul’s plural “ye” shows he is speaking to the whole church, not only to individuals. Together, believers form the temple where God’s Spirit lives.

The phrase “Know ye not” suggests the Corinthians should already understand this truth. Paul is not introducing a new idea but reminding them of what they have forgotten. The indwelling Spirit is a present reality, not a future hope. This truth should shape how believers see themselves, treat one another, and live each day.

Paul’s teaching here connects to the Old Testament temple, where God’s glory filled the tabernacle and later the temple in Jerusalem. Now, through the Spirit, God’s presence resides in His people. The following verse warns that whoever defiles God’s temple will be destroyed, showing how seriously God regards the holiness of His dwelling place. This warning applies to how believers treat the church and conduct themselves within it.

Because the Spirit dwells in believers, their bodies and their corporate life are sacred. This awareness should lead to personal holiness, unity, and mutual respect. In a church marked by division, Paul’s reminder calls believers to honour one another as part of God’s temple. The church is not merely a human institution but a spiritual reality indwelt by God Himself.

Do you live with the awareness that God’s Spirit dwells in you and in your fellow believers? How would your words, actions, and relationships change if you truly saw yourself and the church as God’s temple? Let this truth lead you to reverence, unity, and a deeper dependence on the Spirit who lives within.
