1 Corinthians 12:11
“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”
Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in which the apostle Paul addresses the spiritual gifts and their purpose within the body of Christ. In this particular verse, Paul emphasizes the role of the Holy Spirit in distributing spiritual gifts among believers.
The Unity of the Holy Spirit:Paul begins by stating, “But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit.” Here, Paul refers to the Holy Spirit as the source and originator of the various spiritual gifts. While believers possess diverse gifts, they all come from the same Spirit. This highlights the unity and harmonious functioning of the Holy Spirit within the body of Christ.
The Distribution of Gifts:The verse continues, “dividing to every man severally as he will.” Here, Paul emphasizes that the Holy Spirit is the one who distributes the spiritual gifts to individual believers. The phrase “severally as he will” indicates that the Holy Spirit bestows gifts according to His own discretion and purpose. It implies that no one should boast about their gifts or feel superior to others since the allocation of spiritual gifts is entirely at the Spirit’s discretion.
This verse reminds believers that their spiritual gifts are not earned or achieved by their own merit but are given by the Holy Spirit as He determines. It emphasises the importance of recognising the sovereignty of the Spirit in the distribution of gifts and promotes humility, unity, and cooperation among believers.
Overall, 1 Corinthians 12:11 encourages believers to appreciate the diversity of spiritual gifts within the body of Christ and to honour the Holy Spirit as the one who empowers and equips each member for their unique role in the church. It calls for a cooperative and unified approach to serving God and fulfilling His purposes.
