2 Corinthians 3:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:40
Listen to this article

“Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.”

Context:Before delving into the verse itself, it’s essential to understand the context in which it is written. The Apostle Paul wrote the book of 2 Corinthians to address various issues and challenges faced by the church in Corinth. In this particular chapter, Paul contrasts the ministry of the new covenant with the ministry of the old covenant given through Moses. He emphasizes the surpassing glory and freedom found in Christ.

Manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ:Paul begins by highlighting that the Corinthians themselves are like a letter or an epistle that speaks of Christ. Their transformed lives and the way they live out their faith are a testimony to the power of the Gospel and the work of Christ in them. Their very existence as a Christian community is a living proclamation of Christ’s ministry.

Written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God:Unlike a letter written with ink on perishable materials like paper, the testimony of the Corinthians is not based on external factors but on the work of the Holy Spirit. Their transformed lives and their faith are evidence of the work of God’s Spirit within them. The Gospel is not merely a set of rules and regulations to be followed but a life-transforming message that is written on their hearts by the Holy Spirit.

Not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart:Paul contrasts the old covenant, which was written on tablets of stone (referring to the Ten Commandments given to Moses), with the new covenant. The old covenant, though glorious, was external and couldn’t change the hearts of people. In contrast, the new covenant is internal, written on the hearts of believers. It is a covenant that transforms and empowers believers to live out God’s will.

Overall, 2 Corinthians 3:3 reminds us that our lives should reflect the transformative power of the Gospel. As believers, we are not called to be mere followers of a set of rules, but to be living testimonies of Christ’s work in us. Our lives should demonstrate the work of the Holy Spirit within us, as the Gospel is written on our hearts and seen by others through our actions, attitudes, and love.

Remember to read the entire chapter and even the entire book of 2 Corinthians to gain a deeper understanding of the message and teachings of Paul.
