“Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Ephesians 1:14 (KJV) says: “Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”

Understanding the Context:Before diving into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context of Ephesians. The book of Ephesians was written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Ephesus. It is a letter emphasizing the spiritual blessings and unity that believers have in Christ.

The Earnest of Our Inheritance:The phrase “Which is the earnest of our inheritance” refers to the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. The Holy Spirit is given to believers as a down payment or a guarantee of their future inheritance. It is a foretaste of what is to come. This earnest, or guarantee, assures believers that they are truly God’s children and that they have a secure and eternal future with Him.

Until the Redemption:The verse continues with the phrase “until the redemption of the purchased possession.” This refers to the future fulfillment of God’s plan of salvation, which includes the redemption of believers’ bodies. While believers have already received the Holy Spirit as a guarantee, the fullness of their redemption will be realized at the return of Christ and the resurrection of the dead.

Unto the Praise of His Glory:The purpose of this entire process, from the giving of the Holy Spirit to the final redemption, is “unto the praise of his glory.” God’s ultimate goal is to bring glory to Himself through the redemption and restoration of His people. Believers are called to live in a way that reflects God’s glory and brings Him honor and praise.

Application:

  • Assurance of Salvation:Ephesians 1:14 provides assurance to believers that they are secure in their salvation. The presence of the Holy Spirit in their lives is a guarantee of their inheritance in Christ.
  • Hope in the Future:This verse reminds believers that their ultimate redemption is yet to come. It encourages them to look forward to the day when they will be fully transformed and united with Christ.
  • Living for God’s Glory:Understanding that our redemption is ultimately “unto the praise of his glory” should motivate believers to live in a way that brings honor to God. We are called to reflect His character and love in our lives.

In conclusion, Ephesians 1:14 highlights the work of the Holy Spirit as the earnest of our inheritance, the future redemption of believers, and the purpose of it all – to bring praise and glory to God. It reminds us of the assurance we have in Christ and the hope we have for the future, while calling us to live in a way that brings honor to God.
