Ephesians 5:17
Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:17 (KJV)
Context
Paul’s words in Ephesians 5:17 come in the middle of a larger appeal to live wisely. The opening word “Wherefore” ties this verse directly to the previous instruction about making the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:16). Those who fail to use their time well and remain ignorant of the Lord’s will are described as unwise.
Meaning
The command “be ye not unwise” is a clear call to reject foolishness and spiritual dullness. Paul assumes that believers can choose wisdom and grow in understanding. The positive side of the command is to be “understanding what the will of the Lord is.” This implies that God’s will is not a hidden mystery but something that can be known and applied. The verse contrasts foolishness with a deliberate, active pursuit of the Lord’s will.
The “will of the Lord” refers to God’s purpose, plan, and desires for His people. Throughout Scripture, God’s will includes moral guidance, salvation, sanctification, and the fulfillment of His purposes in the world. A helpful distinction is between God’s secret will—His sovereign decree—and His revealed will, which is the standard for Christian conduct. Ephesians 5:17 focuses on the revealed will, the part that believers are responsible to understand and obey.
Some ancient manuscripts and versions, such as the Vulgate and Syriac, read “the will of God” instead of “the will of the Lord.” The close connection between the two titles shows that understanding the Lord’s will is the same as understanding God’s will.
Application
To apply this verse, believers should actively pursue understanding of God’s will through regular Bible study, prayer, and dependence on the Holy Spirit. They should also listen to wise and mature believers. As understanding grows, decisions and actions can align with God’s principles, bringing Him glory and advancing His kingdom. The command is not passive; it calls for intentional effort to know and do what the Lord desires.
Reflection
Ephesians 5:17 urges believers not to remain unwise but to seek understanding of the Lord’s will. By consistently turning to God’s Word and walking in the Spirit, Christians can live wisely and make choices that honor Him.
