Philippians 2:4

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

Philippians 2:4 (KJV)

The apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians to the church in Philippi. In this passage, he urges believers to adopt a mindset of humility and unity, emphasizing the importance of considering the interests of others. The immediate context, Philippians 2:1-5, calls Christians to be like-minded, loving, and united, and to have the mind of Christ, who exemplified selflessness.

The verse begins with the instruction, “Look not every man on his own things.” This is not a prohibition against caring for one’s own affairs; rather, it warns against selfishness and self-centeredness. A person should take care of his worldly responsibilities and provide for himself and his family, but his attention should not be wholly absorbed by his own concerns. The Greek verb “skopeō” means to look, consider, or fix one’s attention on something, indicating an intentional, ongoing focus. The verse challenges us to avoid being solely focused on our own interests, needs, and desires, reminding us that a self-centered mindset can hinder our relationships with others and our overall spiritual growth.

The second part of the verse says, “but every man also on the things of others.” This calls for a tender interest in the welfare of the whole community, letting the needs of others lie near one’s heart. It does not mean improper interference in others’ business, but a genuine care for their well-being. Paul encourages believers to have a broader perspective and to actively consider the needs and concerns of others. This attitude of selflessness fosters unity, compassion, and empathy within the community of believers.

The preceding verses in Philippians 2:5-11 highlight the ultimate example of selflessness: Jesus Christ. It describes how Jesus, despite being divine, humbled Himself, took on human form, and obediently died on the cross for the redemption of humanity. This serves as a powerful illustration of selflessness, urging us to follow in His footsteps.

Applying the principles of Philippians 2:4 in our daily lives requires intentional effort. Here are some practical steps to consider:

  • Develop an attitude of gratitude: Cultivate a heart that appreciates the blessings in your life and acknowledges God’s provision. This attitude helps shift the focus away from self-centeredness.

  • Practice active listening: When engaging with others, genuinely listen to their thoughts, concerns, and needs. Seek to understand their perspectives and empathize with their experiences.

  • Look for opportunities to serve: Actively seek ways to bless others and meet their needs. This may involve offering assistance, showing kindness, or supporting them in practical ways.

  • Prioritize unity: Strive for unity within your relationships, whether in your family, church, or community. Foster an environment where individuals feel valued and included.

  • Regularly examine your motives: Continually evaluate your intentions and motivations. Ask yourself if your actions are primarily driven by self-interest or a genuine concern for others.

By studying and applying Philippians 2:4, we can develop a Christlike attitude of selflessness, which brings glory to God, strengthens our relationships, and allows us to impact the lives of others positively.

How often do I find myself primarily concerned with my own needs and desires? What might be some consequences of constantly prioritizing my own interests? How can I actively cultivate an attitude of considering the interests of others? In what practical ways can I demonstrate care and concern for those around me? How does contemplating the selflessness of Christ inspire me to live a life of considering others? What specific areas of my life can I surrender to God and allow Him to shape me into a more selfless person?
