Philippians 2:16

Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

Philippians 2:16 (KJV)

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians to the church in Philippi while he was imprisoned. In this verse, he encourages believers to hold fast to the “word of life” and live in a manner that brings him joy. The immediate context urges them to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, to be blameless and innocent, and to shine as lights in a crooked and twisted generation.

The “word of life” refers to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the message of salvation and eternal life through faith in Him. It is the good news that Paul preached and sought to share with others. Some commentators also see a reference to Christ Himself as the essential Word, the living Word, in whom life resides.

Paul urges the believers to “hold forth” or hold firmly to the word of life. This implies a responsibility to preserve, proclaim, and defend the Gospel in the midst of a world that may oppose it. Christians are called to be faithful witnesses and ambassadors of Christ, living out and sharing the message of salvation.

Paul’s desire is that he may rejoice in the day of Christ, which refers to the future day of Jesus’ return and the final judgment. Paul longs to see the Philippians and other believers stand firm in their faith, remaining committed to the Gospel. This would bring him joy, knowing that his efforts in spreading the Gospel were not in vain.

By holding forth the word of life and seeing the Philippian believers continue in their faith, Paul’s own ministry and work would not be in vain. It would validate and affirm his labors in sharing the Gospel and investing in the spiritual growth of the Philippian church.

As believers, we are also called to hold forth the word of life in our lives. We are to live out the Gospel in our words and actions, being a testimony to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. It is important to share the Gospel with others and be intentional in our witness, knowing that our efforts are not in vain when we bring others to a saving knowledge of Christ.

  • Philippians 2:16 reminds us of the responsibility and joy of holding forth the word of life. By remaining faithful to the Gospel and sharing it with others, we can bring joy to those who have invested in our spiritual growth, and we can be confident that our efforts in spreading the Gospel are not in vain.
