Philippians 2:18

For the same cause also do ye joy, and rejoice with me.

Context

Philippians 2:12-18 forms one continuous exhortation. Paul urges the Philippian believers to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, to do all things without murmuring or disputing, and to be blameless and pure as children of God, shining as lights in a crooked and perverse world. Verse 18 concludes this passage by calling the believers to share in the joy that Paul himself expresses.

Meaning

The phrase “for the same cause” points back to verse 17, where Paul speaks of being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of their faith. His rejoicing is not diminished by imprisonment or the prospect of martyrdom; rather, he sees his suffering as a libation poured out for their faith. The “same cause” is the mutual joy in the progress of the gospel and the faithful service of believers, even in the face of suffering. Paul’s joy is grounded in the confidence that their labor in the Lord is not in vain, and he calls the Philippians to rejoice with him in that sacrificial service.

Biblical connections

The reciprocal joy in verses 17-18—Paul rejoices with them, and they are to rejoice with him—creates a fellowship of joy in the midst of suffering and service. This shared joy reflects the Christ-like attitude of humility and self-sacrifice that Paul commends throughout the chapter, as believers are called to imitate Christ in their care for one another.

Application

As believers, we are called to maintain an attitude of joy and gratitude in all circumstances. Just as Paul encourages the Philippians to rejoice, we can find joy in the Lord and share that joy with fellow believers.

We are not meant to navigate life’s difficulties alone but to lean on one another, supporting and encouraging each other.
