Receiue him therfore in the Lord with all gladnesse, and hold such in reputation: Philippians 2:29 (KJV)

The book of Philippians was written by the apostle Paul while he was imprisoned, most likely in Rome. It is addressed to the Christians in Philippi, a city in Macedonia, and is filled with encouragement, exhortation, and gratitude for the believers’ support.

In this verse Paul refers to a man named Epaphroditus, a member of the Philippian church who had brought a gift to Paul while he was in prison. Epaphroditus had visited Paul, delivered the Philippians’ support, and was now returning to his home congregation.

The verse begins with the exhortation to “receive him therefore in the Lord.” Paul encourages the believers to welcome Epaphroditus with gladness and love. This instruction highlights the importance of receiving and accepting fellow believers in Christ, extending hospitality and genuine affection, and reflects the unity and fellowship that should characterize the body of Christ.

Paul emphasizes that Epaphroditus should be received with “all gladness.” The call to rejoice underscores the joy and happiness that ought to accompany the reception of fellow believers. A Christian community should be marked by love, warmth, and genuine happiness when welcoming one another, and such rejoicing together in the Lord’s work fosters a healthy and vibrant fellowship.

The verse concludes by urging the believers to “hold such men in reputation.” This means they should hold Epaphroditus in high esteem and honor him for his service to the Lord. Having risked his life to minister to Paul and bring the Philippians’ gift, Epaphroditus exemplifies sacrificial service, and Paul’s instruction calls the church to recognize and appreciate such dedication, demonstrating humility, gratitude, and respect.

Application to our lives follows naturally. We are to cultivate a welcoming and loving attitude toward fellow believers, rejoicing and being glad when we encounter them, extending warm hospitality, and embracing them as part of God’s family. We should also acknowledge and appreciate the service and sacrifices of other Christians, honoring their contributions to the body of Christ. Such an attitude of love, joy, and respect strengthens the bonds within the Christian community and testifies to the transformative power of Christ’s love.

Overall, Philippians 2:29 reminds us of the importance of receiving believers with joy, holding them in high regard, and fostering a spirit of love and unity within the Christian community.
