Philippians 2:28

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.”

Context:Understanding the background of the verse is essential for a comprehensive study. The Apostle Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians while he was imprisoned, expressing his love and gratitude for their support. In this particular verse, Paul is referring to Epaphroditus, a fellow believer and companion who had been sent by the Philippians to minister to Paul during his imprisonment.

The Purpose of Sending Epaphroditus:Paul states that he sent Epaphroditus “the more carefully.” This phrase emphasizes the care and urgency with which Paul sent him. Paul’s primary purpose in sending Epaphroditus was two-fold:

  • a. Rejoicing: Paul wanted the Philippians to experience joy when they would see Epaphroditus again. This suggests that Epaphroditus carried a message or report that would bring encouragement and gladness to the Philippians.
  • b. Less Sorrow: Paul wanted to alleviate his own sorrow or distress. It is possible that Paul was concerned about the Philippians’ worry for Epaphroditus since he had fallen ill during his visit to Paul. By sending him back, Paul intended to relieve their anxiety and lessen his own burden of sorrow.

The Importance of Rejoicing:Throughout the letter to the Philippians, Paul emphasizes the importance of rejoicing in the Lord despite difficult circumstances. Here, Paul’s intention to bring joy to the Philippians reinforces this theme. Joy is not dependent on external circumstances but is rooted in a relationship with Christ.

Concern for Others:Paul’s concern for the well-being of the Philippians and his desire to ease their worries demonstrate his selflessness and love for the church. He placed the interests of others above his own, as he was willing to send Epaphroditus back to provide comfort and reassurance.

Lessons for Believers:Philippians 2:28 teaches us several valuable lessons:

  • a. Care for One Another: We should demonstrate care and concern for fellow believers, taking steps to bring joy and alleviate their burdens.
  • b. Rejoicing in the Lord: Our joy should be rooted in Christ rather than external circumstances. Even in challenging situations, we can find reasons to rejoice in God’s faithfulness.
  • c. Selflessness: Following the example of Paul, we should prioritize the needs of others above our own, seeking to alleviate their sorrows and worries.

Overall, Philippians 2:28 reminds us of the importance of care, joy, and selflessness within the body of Christ. It encourages us to uplift one another, finding reasons to rejoice and providing comfort in times of distress.
