Colossians 1:27
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
Colossians 1:27 (KJV)
Context
Paul wrote Colossians while imprisoned, addressing the church in Colossae. The letter centers on the supremacy of Christ and the sufficiency of His work for salvation. In this verse, Paul speaks of a mystery that was hidden in previous generations but now revealed by God to His saints. The immediate context shows that this revelation was long concealed but has now been made known, and the following verse indicates that Paul’s preaching aims to present every person perfect in Christ Jesus.
Meaning
The mystery is “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” This refers to the indwelling presence of Christ in believers, both Jews and Gentiles. The phrase “riches of the glory” underscores the immense value and splendor of this revelation. God took the initiative to make it known, showing His sovereign pleasure in revealing salvation to all people, including the Gentiles. The mystery is not merely information about Christ but Christ Himself dwelling within His people.
Christ in You
“Christ in you” emphasizes the personal and intimate relationship believers have with Jesus. When a person places faith in Jesus, they receive the Holy Spirit who dwells within them, as Romans 8:9-11 explains. This indwelling transforms and empowers believers to live a new life, guiding, comforting, and strengthening them daily. The presence of Christ within is the very substance of the mystery, making the gospel personal and experiential rather than distant or abstract.
The Hope of Glory
“The hope of glory” points to the future aspect of salvation—the confident expectation of eternal life with God. Because Christ lives in us, we have assurance of sharing in His glory. This hope is not vague but certain, grounded in the presence of Christ within. The indwelling Christ guarantees that believers will one day share in the fullness of God’s glory, making present suffering and hardship bearable in light of what is to come.
Application
Understanding Christ’s indwelling presence and the hope of glory has practical implications. It reminds us we are never alone and have access to Christ’s power, wisdom, and love. This truth encourages us in difficulty, gives confidence in sharing the Gospel, and inspires us to reflect Christ’s character. Because the mystery has been revealed to all people, including Gentiles, believers today can approach God with the same confidence, knowing that Christ dwells within them. As we embrace this mystery, it transforms our lives and empowers us to live for His glory.
