Colossians 4:17
“And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfill it.”
Context:Before delving into the verse, let’s understand the context of the book of Colossians. The letter to the Colossians was written by the apostle Paul to the church in Colossae, a city in ancient Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey). The letter addresses false teachings and emphasises the supremacy of Christ. In the concluding remarks of the letter, Paul addresses specific individuals, including Archippus.
Identification of Archippus:Archippus is mentioned only here in the New Testament, and little is known about him. However, it is believed that he was a member of the Colossian church, possibly serving in a leadership or ministerial role.
Take Heed to the Ministry:Paul instructs Archippus to “take heed” to the ministry he has received in the Lord. This phrase implies being attentive, watchful, and diligent in fulfilling the specific calling or service given by God. It reminds us that ministry is not just a casual or secondary activity, but something to be taken seriously and approached with responsibility.
Fulfilling the Ministry:Paul urges Archippus to fulfill the ministry entrusted to him. This indicates that Archippus had been given a specific task or responsibility within the body of Christ. Paul’s exhortation implies that it is important not only to receive a ministry but also to carry it out faithfully until completion. It suggests the need for endurance, commitment, and faithfulness in fulfilling the work God has assigned.
Application for Believers:Though this verse was originally addressed to Archippus, it carries relevance for all believers today:
- Discovering and Acknowledging our Ministry: Just as Archippus had received a ministry, we, too, are called to serve in God’s kingdom. It is essential to seek God’s guidance and discover the specific gifts, talents, and areas of service He has equipped us for. Once identified, we must acknowledge and accept the responsibility with humility and gratitude.
- Diligence and Faithfulness: Taking heed to our ministry implies being diligent and faithful in carrying out the tasks and responsibilities entrusted to us. We should approach our service with a sense of purpose and commitment, knowing that our labour is not in vain in the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58).
- Endurance and Perseverance: Paul’s exhortation to fulfill the ministry implies that challenges, obstacles, and discouragement may arise along the way. However, we are called to persevere, relying on God’s strength, grace, and guidance. Through His power, we can overcome difficulties and continue to fulfill our ministry.
- Accountability: Archippus received this instruction publicly, suggesting the importance of accountability within the body of Christ. It is beneficial to have fellow believers who can encourage, support, and hold us accountable in fulfilling our ministry. Likewise, we should be willing to provide the same support to others.
