Philemon 1:4

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

Philemon 1:4 (KJV)

This verse is from the Epistle to Philemon, a personal letter written by the apostle Paul to a believer residing in Colossae. The broader setting concerns Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, who recently became a Christian under Paul’s ministry during his imprisonment. Paul writes to urge Philemon to receive Onesimus back not as a slave but as a beloved brother in Christ. In this opening, Paul establishes a positive, affectionate tone before making his challenging request regarding forgiveness and reconciliation.

Paul begins by expressing his gratitude to God for Philemon, stating that he always remembers him in his prayers. He directs his gratitude to “my God“, acknowledging that all good things and spiritual fruit ultimately come from the Lord. This verse reflects Paul’s genuine appreciation for Philemon as a fellow believer. It highlights two primary spiritual actions: giving thanks and consistent intercessory prayer. By stating he “always” makes mention of Philemon, Paul emphasizes his regular habit of interceding before God.

This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of gratitude and supportive relationships within the Christian community. Paul’s mention of Philemon demonstrates the love and concern believers should have for one another. His focus on God’s faithfulness encourages believers to cultivate gratitude for the people in their lives, particularly fellow Christians who contribute to the spiritual well-being of the church.

Paul’s example inspires others to follow his lead in consistent prayer. By deliberately combining thanksgiving and intercession, Paul offers an enduring model for Christian prayer. Believers are encouraged to regularly lift each other up, expressing thankfulness for God’s work in their lives while seeking God’s continued guidance, provision, and blessing.
