Hebrews 3:1

Listen to this article

“Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus.”

Introduction:This verse is part of the letter to the Hebrews, written by an unknown author. The letter was addressed to Jewish Christians who were facing various challenges and temptations to turn away from their faith in Jesus Christ.

The author addresses the recipients of the letter as “holy brethren.” This term indicates that the readers were not only believers in Jesus but also part of a community of believers. It emphasizes the importance of unity and fellowship among Christians.

The readers of the letter are described as partakers of the heavenly calling. This phrase refers to their participation in the divine invitation and purpose of God. It implies that they have been chosen by God and called to a heavenly destiny through their faith in Jesus Christ.

The author urges the believers to “consider” or fix their attention on the Apostle and High Priest, who is Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, the term “Apostle” is used to describe Jesus as the one sent by God to fulfil His mission and bring salvation to humanity. The title “High Priest” emphasises Jesus’ role as the mediator between God and humanity, who offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for sin.

The verse concludes by stating that Jesus is the Apostle and High Priest of their profession. This title reaffirms Jesus’ divine authority and highlights His significance as the foundation of their faith and the object of their confession.

Overall, Hebrews 3:1 emphasises the importance of recognising Jesus Christ as the central figure of the Christian faith. The readers are reminded of their shared identity as believers and encouraged to focus their attention on Jesus, considering Him as both the Apostle and High Priest who fulfils God’s plan for their salvation.
