Hebrews 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

Context: The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and tempted to turn away from their faith in Christ. The author encourages them to persevere and hold fast to their confession. In Hebrews 6, the author warns against falling away from faith and exhorts believers to imitate those who have inherited the promises of God through faith and patience.

Importance of Diligence: The verse begins with a caution against slothfulness or laziness in the pursuit of faith. It implies the importance of actively seeking and growing in one’s relationship with God. Diligence is necessary to maintain spiritual fervor and avoid complacency.

Followers of Faithful Examples: The verse encourages believers to follow the examples of those who have gone before them and have obtained the promises of God through faith and patience. In the preceding verses, the author mentions Abraham as an example of faith and patience. We are called to imitate the faith and perseverance of those who have demonstrated their trust in God’s promises.

Faith and Patience: Faith and patience are essential qualities for inheriting the promises of God. Faith involves trust and confidence in God’s character and promises, while patience refers to steadfast endurance and perseverance in difficult circumstances. Through faith and patience, believers can experience the fulfillment of God’s promises in their lives.

Inheriting the Promises: The ultimate goal of faith and patience is to inherit the promises of God. In the broader context of Hebrews, this refers to the hope of eternal life and the blessings God has prepared for His faithful followers. Inheriting the promises is a future reward that awaits those who remain steadfast in their faith.

Application: The verse encourages believers to be diligent, actively pursuing their relationship with God. It reminds us to learn from and emulate those who have gone before us in faith. We are called to cultivate faith and patience, trusting in God’s promises and remaining steadfast in difficult times. By doing so, we can experience the fulfillment of God’s promises and inherit the ultimate reward of eternal life.
