Hebrews 8:6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.
Hebrews 8:6 (KJV)
Context
The author of Hebrews wrote to Jewish believers facing persecution and the temptation to return to their former religious practices. The book’s central argument is the absolute superiority of Christ’s ministry and the new covenant over the old covenant established through Moses. Hebrews 8:6 summarizes that argument by presenting three points of comparison: a more excellent ministry, a better covenant, and better promises.
The phrase “But now” signals a transition from the previous discussion about the earthly priesthood and tabernacle, which were copies and shadows of heavenly things. It introduces the present reality of Christ’s superior work.
Meaning
Jesus’ ministry is superior to the ministry of the Old Testament priests because it is based on better promises and a better covenant. His ministry is the real and substantial service of which the old was but an emblem. It pertains to things in heaven, while the old was concerned with the earthly tabernacle, and it is enduring, while the old was to vanish away.
Jesus serves as the mediator of a better covenant. In the Old Testament, Moses acted as the mediator between God and the Israelites when the old covenant was established. However, Jesus fulfils the role of a mediator in an even greater way. The word “mediator” indicates that Jesus is the go-between who brings God and man together. He establishes a new and superior covenant through His sacrifice on the cross.
The new covenant established by Jesus is built upon better promises. The Old Testament covenant was characterised by the Law, which highlighted human shortcomings and required continual sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. In contrast, the new covenant promises forgiveness of sins, salvation, and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. These promises are not merely more favorable but are superior in nature, bringing greater blessings and being legally enacted.
Christ’s ministry is not just different but is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better. The two are inseparable: the excellence of His ministry is measured by the excellence of the covenant He secures.
Jesus’ ministry is superior to the Old Testament priests because He is the mediator of a better covenant.
The new covenant established by Jesus is based on better promises than the old covenant.
The old covenant relied on the Law and human effort, while the new covenant offers forgiveness, salvation, and eternal life through faith in Christ.
Application
Hebrews 8:6 emphasises the superiority of Jesus’ ministry and the new covenant, offering encouragement and assurance to believers that they have something greater in Christ. It reminds us of the privilege and blessings we have through our relationship with Jesus, and it encourages us to hold fast to our faith and not turn back to the old ways.
