Hebrews 9:26

Listen to this article

“For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.”

Context:This verse is found in the book of Hebrews, which is a letter written to Jewish Christians to encourage and strengthen their faith. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Christ’s sacrifice and His role as the ultimate High Priest.

In Hebrews 9:26, the verse highlights several important theological points:

The necessity of Christ’s suffering:The verse starts by stating that if Christ’s sacrifice were to be repeated, He would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world. This emphasizes the significance and completeness of His sacrifice. The repetition of sacrifices under the Old Covenant was insufficient, but Christ’s sacrifice is effective for all time.

The timing of Christ’s appearance:The verse goes on to mention that Christ appeared “once in the end of the world.” This refers to His incarnation and earthly ministry, culminating in His sacrificial death and resurrection. The phrase “the end of the world” does not imply the literal end of the physical world but rather refers to the culmination of God’s redemptive plan.

The purpose of Christ’s appearance:The primary purpose of Christ’s appearance was to “put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” The Old Testament sacrificial system could only provide temporary forgiveness of sins, but Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate and final atonement for sin. His death paid the penalty for sin once and for all, making salvation available to all who believe in Him.

This verse underscores the unique and central role of Jesus Christ in the plan of salvation. His sacrifice, as the Lamb of God, has the power to completely remove sin and reconcile humanity with God. It is through faith in His sacrificial work that believers can experience forgiveness, redemption, and eternal life.

Hebrews 9:26 serves as a reminder of the sufficiency and finality of Christ’s sacrifice, offering hope and assurance to believers that their sins are forgiven and they have been reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ.
