Hebrews 11:23
By faith; Moses when hee was borne was hid three moneths of his parents, because they saw he was a proper childe, and they not afraid of the Kings commandement. Hebrews 11:23 (KJV)
The Book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish believers, encouraging them to persevere in their faith in Jesus Christ. The author emphasizes the superiority of Christ and the New Covenant over the Old Covenant and the heroes of faith in the Old Testament. Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” chapter, highlighting various individuals who demonstrated extraordinary faith.
Moses was a significant figure in Israel’s history. He was born during a time when the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Pharaoh had commanded that all Hebrew male babies be killed at birth. Moses’ parents, Amram and Jochebed, chose to hide him to protect his life.
The verse states that Moses’ parents, by faith, hid him for three months because they believed God would protect him despite Pharaoh’s decree to kill Hebrew infants. Their faith is shown in their refusal to obey the king’s command, their determination to preserve their child, and their sense that Moses was a special child in God’s hands.
This lack of fear of the king’s commandment demonstrates their unwavering trust in God’s protection and provision. They were willing to face the possible consequences of disobedience, confident in God’s faithfulness and sovereignty.
Hebrews 11:23 teaches several valuable lessons. First, faith in God sometimes requires taking risks; Moses’ parents risked severe punishment by defying Pharaoh, yet they trusted in God’s faithfulness and obeyed His leading. Second, God rewards those who trust Him; He protected Moses and later used him mightily to deliver Israel. Third, faith overcomes fear; the parents placed their confidence in God rather than being intimidated by the king’s authority. Fourth, faith can impact future generations, as Moses grew to become one of Israel’s greatest leaders, his character shaped by his parents’ trust in God. Overall, this verse reminds believers of the power of faith and the blessings that follow trusting God even amid difficult circumstances.
