Hebrews 11:23
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
Hebrews 11:23 (KJV)
Context
Hebrews 11 is often called the “Hall of Faith” chapter, highlighting Old Testament figures who demonstrated extraordinary faith. Moses was born while the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, and Pharaoh had commanded that all Hebrew male babies be killed. His parents, Amram and Jochebed, chose to hide him to protect his life.
Meaning
By faith, Moses’ parents hid him for three months because they believed God would protect him despite Pharaoh’s decree. Their faith is shown in their refusal to obey the king’s command, their determination to preserve their child, and their sense that Moses was a special child in God’s hands. The KJV phrase “a proper child” means a beautiful or comely child, and the parents’ perception of his special nature is part of the biblical account.
Their lack of fear of the king’s commandment demonstrates unwavering trust in God’s protection and provision. They were willing to face the possible consequences of disobedience, confident in God’s faithfulness and sovereignty. Their faith was not passive but active, leading them to protect their child despite the personal risk involved.
Biblical connections
This verse focuses on the faith of Moses’ parents, not on Moses’ own faith. Their act of hiding Moses was a direct act of defiance against the king’s edict, and the text emphasizes they were not afraid of the king’s commandment. This faith was expressed in courageous, practical action to preserve life, trusting God over the decree of a human ruler.
Application
Hebrews 11:23 teaches that faith in God sometimes requires taking risks; Moses’ parents risked severe punishment by defying Pharaoh, yet they trusted in God’s faithfulness. God protected Moses and later used him mightily to deliver Israel. Faith overcomes fear, as the parents placed their confidence in God rather than being intimidated by the king’s authority. Faith can impact future generations, as Moses grew to become one of Israel’s greatest leaders, his character shaped by his parents’ trust in God.
Reflection
The faith of Moses’ parents demonstrates that faith can be exercised by ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and that God honors such faith. The author of Hebrews presents this act as a model of persevering faith for believers, encouraging them to trust God’s purposes even when facing opposition.
