2 Peter 1:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:27

For hee receiued from God the Father, honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloued Sonne in whom I am well pleased. 2 Peter 1:17 (KJV)

Context: To better understand the verse, it is important to consider the context in which it was written. The Apostle Peter composed this second letter to encourage and strengthen the faith of believers. In the preceding verses Peter discusses the importance of growing in the knowledge of God, living a godly life, and he also mentions his impending death, reminding the believers of essential truths.

Jesus’ Transfiguration: The verse refers to the event known as the Transfiguration, recorded in Matthew 17:1‑8, Mark 9:2‑8, and Luke 9:28‑36. Jesus took Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His clothes became as white as light. Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Him. Then a bright cloud overshadows them, and a voice from the cloud says, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!”

God’s Honor and Glory: In 2 Peter 1:16‑18 Peter reflects on the Transfiguration and highlights the divine honor and glory that Jesus received from the Father. This remarkable occurrence confirmed Jesus’ identity as the beloved Son of God and demonstrated His divine nature and authority.

Significance: The Transfiguration was a pivotal moment in Jesus’ ministry. It affirmed His unique relationship with God as His Son and fulfilled Old Testament prophecies. The heavenly voice testified to Jesus’ divine nature and expressed God’s pleasure in Him, emphasizing the authority and reliability of Jesus’ teachings and further validating Him as the Messiah.

Application: The significance of this verse extends to believers today. It reminds us of the greatness and glory of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. By acknowledging His divine nature and the honor God bestowed upon Him, we are compelled to listen to His teachings and follow His example. Just as God was well pleased with Jesus, we should seek to please God by aligning our lives with His will and living in obedience to His Word.
