1 John 2:17

And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

1 John 2:17 (KJV)

In this passage, the apostle John encourages believers in their walk with God. He contrasts the temporary nature of the world and its desires with the eternal nature of doing God’s will.

John begins by acknowledging that the world, along with its lusts, is passing away. The world here refers to the system and values opposed to God’s kingdom, including worldly pursuits, material possessions, and desires of the flesh that are contrary to God’s will. These things are temporary and will fade away, so placing too much importance on them leads to disappointment and emptiness.

On the other hand, John highlights the importance of doing the will of God. God’s will encompasses His purposes, commands, and desires for His creation. It involves living in obedience to His Word and following the example of Jesus Christ. By doing God’s will, believers align themselves with the eternal, unchanging purposes of God.

John concludes the verse by emphasizing the eternal significance of doing God’s will. Those who do the will of God find themselves in a lasting and enduring state. While the world passes away, believers who align themselves with God’s will experience a lasting connection with Him and participate in His eternal kingdom.

This verse serves as a reminder that worldly pursuits and desires are temporary, but aligning oneself with God’s will has eternal significance. It encourages believers to prioritize God’s will above worldly ambitions and to seek a lasting relationship with Him.

Reflecting on this verse prompts us to evaluate our priorities and realign them with God’s will, which leads to a more meaningful and lasting impact in our lives and in the world around us.

As we consider the fleeting nature of the world, we are invited to examine our own hearts. Are we placing too much emphasis on temporary desires? The promise of abiding forever with God offers both comfort and direction, calling us to live in obedience and hope.
