Revelation 12:10
And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Revelation 12:10 (KJV)
Context
Revelation 12:10 belongs to the visionary and symbolic language of the book of Revelation, also called the Apocalypse. The verse appears within a description of a great cosmic battle between the forces of good and evil. In this section, the focus falls on God’s victory over Satan and the establishment of His kingdom.
Meaning
The speaker of the loud voice in heaven is not explicitly identified, but it is likely an angel or a heavenly being announcing a significant event. The proclamation declares that four things have now come: salvation, strength, the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ.
Salvation refers to the redemption and deliverance of believers through Jesus Christ. It signifies rescue from sin, death, and the power of evil.
Strength speaks of the power and might of God, displayed in the defeat of Satan and the establishment of His reign.
The kingdom of our God points to God’s eternal rule and authority over all creation, representing the ultimate victory of God over the forces of evil.
The power of His Christ emphasizes the authority and sovereignty of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. It signifies His role as conqueror and Savior, who has the power to defeat Satan.
The reason for this celebration is given next: “the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.” The Greek word for accuser is kategor, meaning one who brings charges. Satan is described as the accuser who continually seeks to bring charges against God’s people. Yet his accusations are no longer valid, because his power and influence have been overcome by God.
Biblical connections
The motif of Satan as accuser echoes Old Testament imagery, such as Job 1:9-11, where Satan accuses Job before God, and Zechariah 3:1, where Satan stands to oppose the high priest. In Revelation 12:10, the casting down of the accuser fulfills that earlier pattern, showing that the basis for victory is the authority of Christ and the vindication of believers.
Application
The “now” in this verse indicates a decisive moment in heavenly reality, even though the full consummation of the kingdom still awaits. This verse assures believers that their accuser has been defeated, and therefore they can have confidence in God’s salvation and power. It encourages trust in God’s sovereignty, knowing that ultimate victory over evil has been secured through Jesus Christ.
Reflection
Because the accuser has been cast down, believers need not fear his charges. Our sins have been forgiven through Jesus’ sacrifice, and the power of Christ is present and active. This truth invites us to rest in the finished work of God and to live with the assurance that His kingdom has come in power.
