Ruth Chapter 2

Summery

Ruth 2 tells the story of a young Moabite woman named Ruth who has recently arrived in Bethlehem with her mother-in-law, Naomi. Ruth decides to go to the fields to gather leftover grain in order to provide for their needs. By God’s providence, she ends up in a field owned by Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband.

As Ruth diligently works, Boaz arrives and notices her. He inquires about her identity and learns of her loyalty and devotion to Naomi. Impressed by her character, Boaz offers his protection and instructs her to continue working in his fields, assuring her safety and provision. Boaz also commands his young men to intentionally leave handfuls of grain for Ruth, ensuring she receives an abundance.

Ruth gratefully expresses her appreciation for Boaz’s kindness, acknowledging that she is a foreigner and does not deserve such favor. Boaz reassures her, recognizing her noble actions towards her mother-in-law and the God of Israel. He prays for God’s blessings upon her.

The chapter concludes with Ruth returning home to Naomi, sharing the day’s events and the generous provision she received from Boaz. Naomi recognizes God’s hand in their situation, realizing that Boaz is a close relative and a potential redeemer who could restore their family’s inheritance.
