Acts 13:17

Listen to this article

“The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.”

Historical Context:The book of Acts was written by Luke as a continuation of the Gospel of Luke. Acts focuses on the early church and the spread of the gospel message after Jesus’ ascension. In this particular verse, the apostle Paul is addressing the Jewish congregation in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, recounting the history of Israel.

  • The God of Israel:

The verse begins by acknowledging that the God being referred to is the God of the people of Israel. It highlights the special relationship God had with the nation of Israel, starting with the choosing of their fathers (patriarchs) like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God’s choice of Israel as His people demonstrates His sovereign plan and purpose.

Exaltation in Egypt:The verse mentions how the Israelites were exalted while dwelling as strangers in the land of Egypt. This refers to the time when Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob, rose to a position of power and influence in Egypt, ultimately saving his family from a severe famine and providing them with the land of Goshen. God’s hand was at work in preserving the Israelites during their time in Egypt.

God’s Deliverance:The verse goes on to emphasize that God, with a high arm, brought the Israelites out of Egypt. This is a reference to the miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from slavery through the leadership of Moses. God performed mighty acts, such as the ten plagues and the parting of the Red Sea, to free His people from bondage and lead them toward the Promised Land.

Spiritual Application:Acts 13:17 highlights God’s faithfulness, sovereignty, and deliverance throughout the history of Israel. It serves as a reminder that God keeps His promises and is actively involved in the lives of His people. It also emphasizes the importance of remembering God’s acts of deliverance and provision, as it strengthens our faith and encourages us to trust Him in our own lives.

  • Encouragement for Believers:

For the early Jewish believers in the synagogue, this verse would have provided encouragement and a sense of identity. It reminded them of their rich history and the faithfulness of God toward their ancestors. It also pointed to the fulfillment of God’s promises through Jesus Christ, whom Paul was about to proclaim as the long-awaited Messiah.

Overall, Acts 13:17 serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, His role as the God of Israel, and His deliverance of His people from Egypt. It holds significance for both historical and spiritual reasons, encouraging believers to trust in God’s faithfulness throughout their own journeys.
