Acts 13:20

And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

Acts 13:20 (KJV)

Paul speaks in the synagogue at Pisidian Antioch, retelling Israel’s history to a Jewish audience. He moves from the exodus and wilderness wanderings to the conquest of Canaan, then to the period of the judges. The judges were leaders whom God raised up to deliver Israel from oppressors and to administer justice, including Othniel, Deborah, Gideon, and Samson. Samuel, the last of the judges, also served as a prophet and anointed both Saul and David as kings.

The phrase “about the space of four hundred and fifty years” has been understood in different ways. Some scholars take it as the approximate duration of the judges’ era itself, while others, noting that certain Greek manuscripts place the 450 years before the statement about judges, see it as reaching back to the Exodus or the conquest. Paul’s word “about” signals that he is giving a round figure, not a precise chronology. The period likely included times of anarchy and foreign oppression between the judges, which helps explain how the total relates to other biblical timelines such as 1 Kings 6:1.

This verse marks a transition in Paul’s sermon: from the judges to the people’s request for a king, leading to Saul’s reign (Acts 13:21). The judges were imperfect deliverers, yet they pointed forward to the perfect deliverance in Christ, whom Paul introduces as the Savior from David’s line (Acts 13:23).

God’s faithfulness did not depend on Israel’s obedience. Even in cycles of sin and failure, He raised up leaders to guide His people. This reassures believers that God continues to provide guidance and deliverance in every generation, preparing the way for His ultimate purposes.

How do you see God’s patient provision in your own history, even in seasons of wandering or failure? The same God who raised judges for Israel is at work in your life, leading you toward the fullness of His plan in Christ.
