Acts 2:16

Context:Acts 2 records the events on the Day of Pentecost, which was fifty days after Jesus’ resurrection. The disciples were gathered in one place when suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven, and tongues of fire appeared and rested upon each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in different languages. A crowd gathered, astonished by what they saw and heard.

To better understand the verse, let’s examine the context and explore the connection to the prophecy in Joel.

The Prophet Joel:Peter quotes from the book of Joel to explain the significance of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Joel was an Old Testament prophet who lived hundreds of years before the Day of Pentecost. He spoke about a future time when God would pour out His Spirit upon all people (Joel 2:28-32).

Prophecy fulfillment:By stating, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel,” Peter declares that the events they were witnessing were the fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy. Peter is affirming that what the people were experiencing-the pouring out of the Holy Spirit and the resulting manifestations-was the direct fulfillment of God’s promise through the prophet Joel.

Joel’s prophecy:In Joel 2:28-32, the prophecy speaks of a time when God’s Spirit would be poured out on all flesh. It mentions various signs and wonders, including dreams, visions, and the prophesying of men and women. Joel also foretells cosmic disturbances and the promise of salvation for those who call on the name of the Lord.

Peter goes on to explain the significance of these events and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. He proclaims that Jesus, whom the crowd crucified, was raised from the dead and is both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:22-36). The people are convicted by Peter’s words and respond by asking what they should do, to which Peter instructs them to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins (Acts 2:37-38).
