Meaning
The verse begins by declaring that Jesus is exalted at the right hand of God. This refers to His position of supreme authority and honour in heaven after His resurrection and ascension. It highlights His victorious reign as King of kings and Lord of lords, a position unique to Christ.
Jesus had promised His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit to them. Acts 2:33 affirms that Jesus received this promise from the Father. The Holy Spirit, who represents the presence and power of God, was given by Jesus to empower His followers for the work of spreading the gospel.
The verse states that Jesus “shed forth” or poured out the Holy Spirit, resulting in the supernatural manifestations the crowd was witnessing. This outpouring included the sound of a rushing wind, tongues of fire, and the disciples speaking in various languages they had not previously known. The phrase “shed forth” indicates a generous, abundant outpouring, and the “this” which the people “see and hear” points to the visible and audible signs of the Spirit’s arrival.
Peter connects these signs to the work of Jesus. They were confirmation that Jesus had indeed been exalted and had received the promised Holy Spirit from the Father. This calls for a response of faith and awe, recognizing that what happened at Pentecost was not a human phenomenon but a divine act of the exalted Christ.
