Acts 2:33

Context:Acts 2 records the events that took place on the day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples in fulfillment of Jesus’ promise. This verse is part of Peter’s sermon to the crowd, explaining the significance of what they were witnessing.

Exaltation at the right hand of God:The verse begins by acknowledging the exaltation of Jesus Christ at the right hand of God. This refers to His position of authority and honour in heaven after His resurrection and ascension. It highlights His victorious reign as the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The promise of the Holy Spirit:Jesus had promised His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit to them (John 14:16-17, 26). Acts 2:33 affirms that Jesus received this promise from the Father. The Holy Spirit, who represents the presence and power of God, was given by Jesus to empower His followers for the work of spreading the gospel.

The outpouring of the Holy Spirit:The verse states that Jesus “shed forth” or poured out the Holy Spirit, resulting in the supernatural manifestations that the crowd was witnessing. This outpouring included the sound of a rushing wind, tongues of fire, and the disciples speaking in various languages they had not previously known.

Significance of what they saw and heard:Peter connects the visible and audible signs of the Holy Spirit’s outpouring to the work of Jesus. It was a confirmation that Jesus had indeed been exalted and had received the promised Holy Spirit from the Father. The miracles and speaking in tongues were evidence of the presence and power of God, validating the message the disciples were proclaiming.

• Application:Acts 2:33 highlights the importance of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer. As followers of Jesus today, we also have access to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit empowers us, guides us, convicts us of sin, teaches us, and enables us to live a life that honours God. We can rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance, strength, and boldness as we fulfil our mission to share the gospel and make disciples.
